Jazz trained, hip-hop educated and influenced by her Jewish roots, Sariyah Idan embodies fiery sensuality rooted in cultural, social and verbal poetry. A New York bred and Los Angeles based independent singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Ms Idan has shared stages with legends and mentors Lee “Scratch” Perry, Pete Seager and Yusef Lateef as well as recordings with Marcia Griffiths and Caron Wheeler on the Vienna based dub band Dubblstandat’s album Woman In Dub. As a front woman and bandleader she has played iconic venues including The Kennedy Center in DC and the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Fusicology reviewed her Deeper Than Skin EP release concert at Hotel Cafe as “powerful, soulful, spirited songs filled with stories of joy, struggle, love and social justice”. Her 2016 collaboration with Haji Ji drew comparisons to Sade by the Canadian publication The Voice Magazine.
As a lyricist Sariyah reveals personal and societal experiences of patriarchy while celebrating the resilience of the human spirit. She believes in the respectful and authentic merging of cultural genres to create vibrational and social transformation. Ms Idan’s evocative style is influenced by soul and reggae’s spiritually political groove, the resiliency in jazz, the celebratory culture mix of Latin styles, hip-hop’s wisdom of overstanding and the sounds of her Jewish ancestry. Her lyricism is inspired by both intimidate personal experience and deep engagement with issues of the day. With a passion for ethnomusicology and social movements, Ms Idan intentionally mixes multiple genres not simply as a sonic tapestry of her environment but also as an expression of social activism and is indebted to her mentors, including Melanie DeMore, for guiding her in this practice. Her understanding of world culture began at age twelve as a touring dancer and singer with world music and dance ensemble The Vanaver Caravan.
In 2015 Ms IDan released her NOT AFRAID Mixtape, including collaborations with MCs Dumi RIGHT (Zimbabwe Legit & Great Mindz) and Mikal Amin (f.k.a Hired Gun), Issahcar Production out of Kingston Jamaica and producer D-Felic out of The Hague Netherlands. She is currently in the studio working on her first LP and featuring on projects by MC Artson and Stevie Blacke.
